Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride

Sunday 12th July 2009

Sunday 31st May 2009.

The last day of May saw us take a big step in our training for the Manchester to Blackpool run. On the hottest day of the year so far, we made a 9am start and headed off from Reddish on the old Stockport canal route. This took us through Debdale Park and Gorton. The line of the canal can be followed and quite a few bridges and infrastructure are left. Around 3 miles later we came to the active Ashton Canal and headed right up through Audenshaw to Portland Basin (Ashton). Tow path traffic was low (due to the early time) and we made good progress. Recent dry weather made the tow path dry, but bumpy in places. Through Ashton the canal winds up through Stalybridge, the canal was fully restored at this point and its a joy to see the area renewed because of the canal.

After Stalybridge the scenery really opens up. We climbed up through Mossley with our destination of Diggle reached in around 2 hours. 16 miles had been covered and we were well pleased!!! Especially as we hadnt been out for ages!!

The return was via the same route, sadly the Diggle Hotel wasnt open, so no chance of a pint, however we found a canal side cafe and ice creme shop on the way back - we treated ourselves to an ice-cream and a rest. We could have stopped a lot longer.

The return journey was slightly quicker (more down hill sections on each lock). However Dunc picked up some damage to his cog while we walked Scout Tunnel. The damage on the top cog was quite bad, we dont know how it happened. We limped home with Dunc using the mid cog.

Overall a good 32 miles covered in under 4 hours.

We covered this route in detail here (link) and its highly recommended. It can get a bit busy especially round Greenfield, you need a bell or in my case loud brakes to warn people of your presence and you will need to slow up. The views are wonderful once the route opens up. We also recommend a pint in the Diggle Hotel, I think they often have bands playing in the beer garden on a Sunday. The climb is steady as you meet the locks, you dont feel as though you are going up a long steep hill, which is good! Well worth a trip out.

Sunday 24th May 2009.

Another quick run around Bury again 14 miles.

Sunday 29th March 2009.

A quick run out round Bury on a lovely sunny spring afternoon, in total we managed a low 14 miles, but we both feel its better than non!! We are still waiting for our sponsorship forms for the Blackpool run, then we can start getting some money in! Hopefully we will try another run in a few weeks.

Sunday 8th February 2009.

A short bike ride (8 miles) to get us back in to the swing of thing after not going much cycling since early last year due to one reason and another plus lazyness. I took the opportunity to get so pictures of the the old TP site in Bury for my uncle, plus we got some pictures of the remines of the old railway that served Yates Duxbury's and the Bridge Hall Mills paper works and found out that the tunnel under Bury New Road has been dug out. Click here for the pictures.

Hopefully there will be more update's this year. But don't hold your breath as Jon is about to become a Dad for the first time.
